Teens and Tweens: The Pressures of Our Teens Today

The teenage years are anything but simple. Not only do today’s teens or tweens need to forge their identity as a young adult, they need to cope with a social structure that is being made ever more complex by technology and new expectations. School assignments are getting more demanding for teens today. The looming focus of college is more nerve-racking than ever, and now they need to figure out not only how to interact with peers face-to-face, but via the internet as well: twice the chance for a terrible faux pas.

As an LPC, I must say that teens are my favorite population to work with.  Through my experience as a professional and my church involvement with teens, I am able to relate to them on their level, accurately addressing these sensitive issues.  At 31 years old, I am old enough to have wisdom and life experience, but young enough to remember the developmental changes I went through in the late 1990s-early 2000s.

The Pressures of Teens Today

Teens, unsurprisingly, cite school as one of their biggest areas of concern. As they grapple with friend selection, puppy love, trying to stay focused in school, appearance, latest trends, and simply just fitting in, they can quickly become overwhelmed.  However, at a time where hormones are raging, teenagers seem to freeze like a deer in headlights.  Sometimes, tweens and teens do not know how to cope with peer pressure, social rejection, and etc and turn to awful coping strategies such as cutting, drinking, or experimenting with drugs.

Here to Help You and Your Child

The good news is that I am here to serve you and your child and empower them to conquer the tendency towards these destructive behaviors.  I offer an environment where tweens and teens can be themselves and open up about how they are feeling.  I know that “adult judgment” that can cause a chatty teen to shut down and stop sharing, closing them off from help.  My office becomes a sanctuary for a troubled young patient, encouraging them to open up and discuss these issues.

It is a privilege to work with one of your most precious gifts, your teen/tween to help them stay or get on the right path as they discover who they are, their dreams and purpose.  Let me help you reach your child, stay connected, and still allow them to flourish as a healthy individual.

I can help treat Tween & Teen Issues such as:

  • ADHD
  • Anxiety
  • Cutting/Self-Injurious behaviors
  • Depression
  • Grief
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorders/Autism Spectrum Disorders and etc.

I look forward to serving you and your tween/teen.  Let the Self-Discovery begin!
