Faith-Based Therapy
Patients often ask me about the benefits that faith-based therapy offers over traditional therapy. Ultimately, the answer comes comes down to the individual, and how much faith factors into their daily lives. As therapists, we see many people seek our services because of some external circumstance, i.e., behavior of themselves or someone they care about – they want help and perhaps even practical answers that faith alone may not provide.
In our practice, we are trained to assist our patients coping skills, problem solving, and management techniques for living with a mental illness. When faith is introduced into this mix, the erroneous belief that has led to damaging behaviors or self-image is addressed at the faith source. No matter what the faith background of a patient may be, their beliefs are connected to the way they see themselves and the way they relate to others. Topics such as co dependency, boundaries, self esteem, nutrition, and communication will appear differently once these beliefs are discussed and used as a framework for a strong, healthy life with a faith relationship intact.
For example, if a Christian turns to our office for help, they might better understand where they struggle by discussing their biblical beliefs with a therapist. The ideas and actions that they may truly believe are in line with biblical teachings may not be, leading to hurt, confusion, and a wounded sense of faith.
Examining personal definitions of faith within a therapeutic setting will help patients better consider what they have been taught. In turn, this will uncover truths about what those lessons have led them to choose: a career, spouse, partner, and even the health of their past and current relationships.
Faith-based therapy is powerful; it can make a lasting difference and deepen the therapeutic experience for those seeking it out.
